Jaap Eden

Jaap Eden was a champion in both cycling and speed skating, but was best known for his skating career. Eden competed at the 1891 unofficial world speed skating championship, in Amsterdam, which was won by American Joseph Donoghue. But at the official world speed skating championships, first held in 1893, Eden won the title in 1893, 1895, and 1896. In 1894 no champion was declared. He set some of the earliest world records over 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000 metres.

On a bike, Eden won two world championships, winning the 1894 amateur 10 km event and the 1895 amateur sprint event. He competed as a professional in cycling from 1897-1902. As an amateur he won five Dutch cycling titles between 1893-95. Eden remains the only man to have won world championships in both speed skating and cycling.
