| Participants | 55 from 14 countries |
The first-prize purse for this event was 15,000 francs, with second receiving 6,000 and third 3,000 francs, which caused headlines in the French sporting papers, and saw 55 riders from 13 nations come to the mark. A huge crowd also came to watch the highly publicized race. There was enough interest that odds were published the morning of the race, with Edmond Jacquelin and Harry Meijers favored at 2-1, followed by Anton Huber at 4-1, and Tom Cooper and Charles Van den Born at 6-1.
The large field required seven rounds of competition, with 12 heats in round one, all with four or five riders. There were eight heats in the quarter-finals, with the winner of each heat advancing to the semis. All other riders went through a series of repêchages, with only the winner of the repêchage, Paul Bourillon, advancing to the semi-finals.
The first semi-final matched Jacquelin against top American Floyd McFarland, but he was no match for Jacquelin, who advanced to the final. Semi-final two saw favored Harry Meijers easily ride off Bourillon. The final semi-final saw an upset as American Tom Cooper defeated Charles Van den Born by ½ length in the sprint. In the final, Cooper led at the strategic run-up to the final sprint, but Meijers shot by him as they started the sprint. Jacquelin chased but could not get by Cooper, and Meijers won comfortably. Jacquelin said, after the race, that because of the wind he had chosen to change his transmission from 8 to 7½, which was the reason he did not win.
