In 1899 W. Marshall took part in a much-publicised money match at Queen’s Club against the host club’s professional Tom Fleming. Marshall, who was the teaching-professional at the Craigside Hydro Hotel in Llandudno, Wales at the time, was well beaten 1-6.0-6, 2-6. Shortly afterwards, the Tennis Club de Paris recruited Marshall as one of their professionals.
Marshall represented Great Britain at the 1900 Paris Olympics in the professional singles event and won just one of his five round-robin matches. He fared better in the professional doubles handicap event, winning the silver medal with partner F. W. Henton, who was the only man Marshall beat in the singles. That silver medal, however, was thanks only to a bye immediately into the final without playing a single game. In the final they where they were beaten by Tom Burke and George Kerr 3-6, 6-3, 1-6.
The following year it was reported that Marshall was affected by severe sun-stroke while competing a Étretat in Normandy. It affected him so much that he ended up in a lunatic asylum.
