Mike Sweeney was a professional athlete in 1900 who won the high jump and long jump for professionals that were held alongside the 1900 Paris Olympic events. Sweeney was an Irish native but emigrated to the United States. In 1895, while still an amateur, he set three world records in the high jump, finally leaving the record at 6-6⅝ (1.97 m), a mark that stood for 13 years.
Sweeney was considered an innovator, helping develop the Eastern cut-off style. Sweeney later became a track & field coach, first at The Hill School in Philadelphia, and then at Yale University.
