Dwight Phillips

After Carl Lewis’s retirement, Dwight Phillips stepped into the void as the world’s best long jumper over the next 15 years. He made two Olympic teams, winning the gold medal at Athina in 2004.

Phillips was a five-time medalist at the World Championships, winning golds in 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2011, with a bronze in 2007. Phillips also competed at the 2001 Worlds, placing eighth, and the 2013 Worlds, finishing 11th, after which he retired. He was the 2003 World Indoor Champion, and won the World Athletics Final in 2003 and 2005, placing second in 2004.

Phillips was a sprinter in high school but switched to the triple jump when he started school at the University of Kentucky. He then transferred to Arizona State University, and focused on the long jump, placing second at the 2000 NCAA Meet. Phillips was ranked in the world top 10 for nine years, from 2002-11, missing only 2008. He was the world #1 in 2003-05 and 2009-10.

In 2020 Phillips was signed by the SPIRE Institute and Academy to become an international track & field ambassador. In 2021 he joined Georgia State University as an assistant coach focusing on the sprints and jumps. He also developed “The Winners Circle”, a program helping young athletes, and collegiate and professional athletes to develop their skills. He was a CEO partner in EPIQ TV, an entertainment program that hosts live streams, movies, documentaries, and playbacks of many different sports.
