Emily deRiel was a modern pentathlete who won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, in the inaugural Olympic appearance of women’s modern pentathlon. DeRiel went to Yale and then studied at Oxford University, earning a master’s of philosophy in English, and in 2008 she earned a master’s in public health from the University of Washington. She started out in modern pentathlon because of an equestrian background and then competed in swimming and track in high school.
DeRiel used her public health training and worked initially at the University of Washington. She eventually became a public health leader in Haiti and Côte d’Ivoire and in 2017 moved to Germany where she became a communications manager with Fairtrade International.
