Virgilio de Léon worked as an accountant but was an excellent sportsman, primarily known for his fencing skills. He was Panamanian épée champion from 1938-54 and sabre champion from 1948-54. He won gold medals with both weapons at the 1938 Bolivarian Games and won the épée title at the 1951 Bolivarian Games. De Léon also played water polo and volleyball for the national team, competing in water polo at the 1938 Bolivarian Games and with the volleyball team at the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games. As an administrator de Léon was President of the Panama Olympic Committee (1968-70) and served as a President of the Panamanian Fencing Federation. He was made an IOC Member in 1969 and served until his resignation in 1994, at which time he was made an Honorary Member.
