Sir Thomas Fearnley was a shipping magnate who was President of the Norwegian Federation of Ship Owners. In 1917, he served on a mission to England was given an Honorary Knighthood in 1920. Fearnley led the family shipping firm of Fearnley & Eger, and his financial position gave him plenty of leisure time to pursue various sports, including skiing, fishing, shooting and golf. In 1910 he founded and was the first President of the Norwegian Lawn Tennis Association. He also was President of the Norwegian Jockey Club and in 1918 became a member of the Norwegian Olympic Committee. Fearnley was co-opted onto the IOC in March 1926 and served until he turned 70-years-old, resigning in May 1950, after which he was made an Honorary Member. In 1950 he donated the Fearnley Cup which the IOC awarded annually (1951-73) to a sports club or local sports association that had performed meritorious achievement in support of the Olympic Movement.
