Francisco Ghigliani qualified as a doctor in 1908 but never practiced medicine, taking up a career in politics and journalism. He was a newspaperman, who started on El Dia and he later became director of El Pueblo and El Ideal, where he expressed his strong patriotic feelings through his writing. He held several government posts and in 1934 became a member of the Chamber of Senators. Ghigliani founded the Uruguayan Olympic Committee in 1923 and served as its President from then until his death in 1936. He was co-opted onto the IOC in June 1921 and served for 15 years but never attended an IOC Session. Ghigliani’s death was a surprise and initial reports were that he committed suicide, but further investigation revealed that he had been murdered. After his death the President of Uruguay called a meeting of his ministers and Ghigliani was awarded the title of Honorary Minister of Uruguay.
