Reynaldo González received degrees in social science and pedagogical sciences. He qualified as a primary and senior school teacher but worked primarily in sports administration. In 1981 he became President of the Cuban Amateur Baseball Federation, serving until 1999. He was senior vice-president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) from 1981-94 and became its President from 1994-97. González served as vice-president of the Organizing Committee of the Central America and Caribbean Games, held in Havana in 1982. He was secretary-general of the Cuban Olympic Committee from 1984-2000 and was first vice-president of the International Baseball Association (IBA) from 1988-99.

González was elected as an IOC Member in 1995. He served in several commissions, notably the Working Group for Women and Sports (1996-2001), the Women and Sport Commission (2006-15) and he was on the editorial board of the 2009 Olympic Congress (2007-09).
