HRH Prince Franz Joseph served as the 12th Prince of Liechtenstein but was the first to take up permanent residence in the country. He was the nephew of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 sparked World War I. A native Austrian, Prince Franz Joseph studied forestry in Wien (Vienna) at the agricultural college. He became head of state in Liechtenstein in 1938, serving until 1984 when he turned over the duties to his oldest son, Hans-Adam. Prince Franz Joseph was co-opted onto the IOC in July 1936 and served until 1980, although he only attended 3 of a possible 27 sessions during his tenure.
