HRH Prince Georg Wilhelm was the second son of the Duke and Duchess of Brunswick, and was the grandson of the last German Emperor. He attended the elite boarding school Schule Schloss Salem in Überlingen on Lake Constance from 1930-34, which had been founded by his uncle, Prince Maximilian of Baden, the last German State President, in 1920. Prince Georg Wilhelm later headed the Schule Schloss Salem from 1948-59 and then was director of the München Riding Academy from 1959-62.
Prince Georg Wilhelm’s status is unique in IOC history. He was appointed President of the International Olympic Academy (IOA) in 1965 but had to resign in 1970 when it was noted to be illegal for a foreigner to be President of a Greek institution. He was co-opted as an ex officio member of the IOC in April 1966 as the IOA President and served until September 1971, after he had left that post. There was no provision in the Olympic Charter for IOA President to be IOC Members, and this was never again enacted.
