Kevin O’Flanagan studied medicine at University College in Dublin, but was a top Irish sportsman. He won Irish Championships in the 100 yards and long jump, and was a rugby and football international. In medicine O’Flanagan was Chairman of the National Rehabilitation Board in 1968, was President of the Irish Sports Medicine Association, President for the World Congress of Rehabilitation in 1969, and was on the Sports Medicine Committee for the Council of Europe.
O’Flanagan was made an IOC Member in July 1976, and remained on the IOC until his resignation in December 1994, after which he was made an Honorary Member. He served on the Medical Commission from 1980-94 and was on the Commission for the Olympic Programme from 1993-94.
