Richard Peterkin studied at the University of the West Indies at the Saint Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago campus. He later studied at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. Peterkin became an accountant, working as a partner with Price Waterhouse Coopers on Saint Lucia, and later as a partner with Grant Thornton Windward Islands.
Peterkin was President of the National Olympic Committee of Saint Lucia from 1992-2013. In 2009 he was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and remained as a member until 2018 when he had to step down because of age limits. In 2019 he received the Olympic Order in Silver from the IOC, and in 2022 was named an honorary life member of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
