Saul Pires was a Portuguese rowing champion in 1933-34 and was director of the Portuguese Rowing Federation for several years. In business he was an accountant and founded the sports newspaper Sport Illustrado. Pires was co-opted onto the IOC in September 1957. In 1960 at Roma, the IOC was informed of irregularities in hotel costs for his family and after an investigation into the matter, Pires was expelled from the IOC in June 1962.
