Doug Roby

A business administration graduate of the University of Michigan in 1923, Doug Roby settled in Michigan, spending his entire business career from 1934-92 with American Metal Products Company. While a student in Ann Arbor, Roby played on the baseball team as a leftfielder from 1921-22 and was a fullback on the football team. He then played one year of professional football in the NFL with the Cleveland Indians (1923). Roby was also an excellent squash player and helped his Detroit team win the US team squash championship in 1942.

Roby rose to become President of that American Metal Products from 1954-58 and Chairman of the Board from 1958-60. He also served on the Board of Directors of numerous companies in the Detroit and Michigan area, including the Detroit Arts Commission, the Detroit Zoological Society, and as a trustee of Harper-Grace Hospitals. In the field of sport, he served as vice-president of the Amateur Athletic Union from 1951-53, president of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) (1955-59), and was a vice-president and on the board of the USOC, serving as President from 1965-69. Roby was named to the IOC in 1952, serving until 1984.
