Aleksey Romanov studied at the Central Institute of Physical Education in Moskva, and was good enough to compete in the national athletics championships. He later became a professor of physical education. In sports administration he served as President of the USSR State Committee, Deputy Minister for Health (in the state of Russia), and Vice-President of the Council for the Sports’ Union. He also wrote and edited a magazine on the theory and practice of physical culture, as well as several books. Romanov was co-opted into the IOC in February and resigned in September 1971, after which he became an Honorary Member.
