Manfred, Ritter von Markhof was twice Austrian trap shooting champion, and also competed in polo and golf. Ritter von Markhof was from a wealthy family and after World War II devoted himself to restoring the family businesses. He also worked to revive Austrian sports after the War. He was a founding member of the new Austrian Olympic Committee in 1946, and remained on the board for 20 years. In sports administration he served, at various times, as President of the Automobile Club, the Motorcycle Club, the Trotting Association, the Touring Club and Hainburg Golf Club. Ritter von Markhof was co-opted onto the IOC in July 1947, resigning in June 1969, after which he was made an Honorary Member.
