Biography

Philipp von Schoeller studied economics at Innsbruck University and then became a businessman and industrialist. He served as secretary of the Innsbruck Chamber of Commerce until 1948 and then was a board member of various Austrian companies. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Austrian Industrialists, Chairman of the Austrian Federal Chamber of Commerce from 1971-90, President of the International Chamber of Commerce in 1982, and as Chairman of the ICC-International Maritime Bureau in London.

Von Schoeller competed in show jumping for Austria from 1953-58 and was Austrian Champion in 1953. In administration he was Commodore of the Yacht Club Austria in 1974-78, and President of the Society for the Support of the Spanish Riding School in Wien (Vienna) (1971-79). Von Schoeller became an IOC Member in 1977, and remained on the committee until his resignation in 2000. He served on several IOC Commissions, as follows: Cultural Commission (1981-84), Study and Evaluation Commission for the Preparation of the Olympic Games (1984-88), New Sources of Financing Commission (1984-88), Finance Commission (1989), and Programme Commission for the Winter Games (1989-91).
