Roger Haines had been on Richard Byrd’s first Antartic expedition in 1928-30. In the 1932 dogsled race, he collapsed at the end of the first day run from running up the trails behind his sled. His team of dogs was owned by Moseley Taylor, president of the New England Sled Dog Club and scion of the family that owned the Boston Globe.
