Lane Spina was one of the best known freestyle skiiers in the 1980s for his skill in ski ballet, later renamed acroskiing in the mid-1990s. Spina competed in ski ballet as a demonstration event at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics. He won four medals at the Freestyle World Championships, a gold in 1991, silvers in 1986 and 1989, and a bronze in 1993. On the World Cup circuit, he placed second for the year-end ranking in 1986-89 and 1991, and was third in 1984 and 1992.
Spina went to college at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), studying mechanical engineering. He later earned an MBA from UNLV.
