Biography

Stanley Walker was a Massachusetts native who was drafted in 1942 and served in the 86th Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado. Walker was a ski instructor. After the war he re-enlisted and was a ski and climbing instructor until 1958. From 1947-50 he participated in six airplane rescue missions, three in the Northwest US and three near Whitehorse, Canada. He served in the Korean War for 14 months.

Walker competed at the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics in the military ski patrol demonstration event. He also carried the US placard, stating “Etats-Unis” at the Opening Ceremony. In 1958 he was also a member of the first US Army biathlon team. Walker was in the Army until his retirement in December 1963. He then settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he worked for the postal service for 20 years.
