From his native Nova Scotia, Ab Brown came to British Columbia at the age of two. There, he worked as a woodworker and later joined the local fire department until his retirement as fire chief in 1957. For 23 years, he played lacrosse for the local New Westminster Salmonbellies, and represented Canada in the lacrosse demonstration at the 1928 Olympics. With this team, Brown also won three Mann Cup titles. He later took up coaching, and also became a referee, before eventually getting well known as a specialist in repairing lacrosse sticks. He continued to do this job until the age of 89, when he suffered a stroke. In 1967, he was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame
