From 1953 to 1972 tennis player Jørgen Ulrich was a member of Denmark’s Davis Cup team, playing in 54 matches for the team. From the late 1950s until the early 1970s Ulrich made 21 appearances at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round on three occasions (1959, 1960, 1964). At the 1966 edition of the tournament he also reached the quarter-finals in the doubles with compatriot Jan Leschly. As a singles player Ulrich had several wins on the amateur circuit, including the German Indoor Championships (1957, 1971) and the French Indoor Championships (1960, 1961).
At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics tennis was played as a demonstration event with Ulrich competing in the singles and doubles, pairing with his brother Torben in the latter. Jørgen and Torben’s father was Danish tennis legend Einer, who was active during the 1920s and 1930s. Jørgen was also the uncle of Lars Ulrich, who had a brief career as a tennis player, before finding fame as the drummer and co-founder of the heavy metal band Metallica.
