A stockbroker’s clerk, Hammy Oswald was a member of the strong Rathclaren Rovers team that dominated Irish cycle polo in the early part of the 20th century. Oswald’s brothers Alfred, Larry and Willie made up the rest of the team. Hammy, Larry, Alred and Ralph Mecredy were all in the team that played Germany at the 1908 Olympics, which the Irish (representing Great Britain) won 3-1. Hammy also joined Larry in the Ireland team that beat England at Crystal Palace on 28 September 1901, in the sport’s first ever international.
