Mays attended Harvard College, class of 1932, and played football, hockey, and baseball there, as a second baseman on the baseball team.
Mays later went to business school at Harvard and, while there, helped coach the Harvard freshman team. Mays served in the Coast Artillery Corps during World War II. In 1950 he died from a fractured skull he sustained in a car accident that also killed his wife.
