Bud Havens competed in the canoeing demonstration events at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He won the kayak singles, kayak doubles, and kayak fours, and finished second in the Canadian fours. Havens was a former Mid-Atlantic wrestling champion.
His brother was Bill Havens, who was also supposed to compete at Paris, but stayed home so he could be there for the birth of his first child, Frank Havens, Frank later won a silver and gold medal in the C-1 10K in 1948 and 1952, respectively. When he won his gold medal in 1952, he sent his father a telegram that read, “Dear Dad, thanks for waiting around for me to get born in 1924. I’m coming home with the gold medal you should have won. Your loving son, Frank”. Bud Havens was also the uncle of Bill Havens, another of Bill’s sons, who also competed in canoeing at the 1948 Olympics.
