Like his brother Caleb, Donaldson Kelly went to the Baltimore Friends School and later to Johns Hopkins University. In high school Caleb captained the football, basketball, and lacrosse teams and was also an outstanding athlete at Johns Hopkins in those sports. He was selected for the All-American lacrosse first team in 1933 and co-captained the team in 1934. With Donaldson Kelly playing lacrosse for Johns Hopkins they were US Champions for three consecutive years 1932-34, which also qualified him to play in the 1932 Olympics. After college he played successfully for a number of years with the Baltimore Athletic Club team and also coached his old high school team.
Kelly started working for General Motors after college, but later founded his own GM dealership, mostly selling Chevrolets and Buicks. Simultaneously, he coached the Washington College lacrosse team for almost 20 years and in 1966 was elected lacrosse coach-of-the-year. In 1977 Kelly retired from coaching and business concurrently.
