James Merriken was a defenseman at Johns Hopkins, also playing in the 1932 Olympic demonstration game against Canada. One year later he captained the team that won the US Championship. After graduating from Baltimore Friends School Merriken earned a degree in economics from Johns Hopkins in 1933.
Merriken was a successful entrepreneur in the timber industry, also co-owning a Christmas tree farm. He was a great financial supporter of Johns Hopkins, including the Lacrosse Hall of Fame and was active in several university related clubs and programs. He was the brother-in-law of his teammate Walter Francis Kneip, Jr., who did not play in Los Angeles.
