Like several of his teammates, Rob Roy studied at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute before studying mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He played football and lacrosse and was a member of the US team in the lacrosse demonstration at the 1928 Olympics. Having started his career in the printing business, improving the manual and technical processes, he made the move into engineering and specialized in the relatively new field of industrial organization. In 1939, he returned to Johns Hopkins and started teaching industrial organization and management. After World War II, he accepted an offer to join the staff as an associate professor, and soon became a full professor. Roy was named dean of the engineering faculty in 1953, and held that position until 1966, when he became president of the American Society for Engineering Education. Roy also wrote a number of standard works in his field, and took over several honorary duties after his retirement in 1973.
