As a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the late-1940s, Spencer Spaulding was a standout lacrosse defenseman who co-captained the team in 1947 alongside Bob Hutcheon. He was also selected to represent the United States in the lacrosse demonstration event at the 1948 London Olympics, which ended in a 5-5 tie against an All-England squad. Spaulding later acquired a doctorate in theoretical physics and had a distinguished career at RCA during the 1960s. He eventually moved to Xerox, where he worked with laser printers, and then Comsat, where he developed communication satellites. In his later years he took to poetry, and at the age of 90 published a book of short stories.
