LeAnn Shannon competed in the 800 metre wheelchair demonstration event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She developed a spinal cord injury as an infant that left her unable to walk. She took up wheelchair competition when she was only 5-years-old and raced at the Atlanta Olympics when she was only 14. She also competed at the 1996 Paralympics, winning three gold medals and a silver medal.
LeAnn Shannon eventually attended the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University. As of 2018, she was completing a residency in radiology at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
