Karen Kurreck had an unusual path to Olympic cycling as she started as a gymnast at the University of Illinois, then as Karen Brems. In 1984 she was named the Illini Athlete of the Year and won the Big 10 Medal of Honor Award.
Kurreck switched to cycling after college and won the 1994 World Championship individual time trial, the first time the event was contested for women. She competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as a 38-year-old.
Kurreck later switched her focus to cyclo-cross and competed in masters’ events. She was 50+ Masters World Champion in 2012 and 2013 and was USA Champion in masters’ cyclo-cross in 2013, 2015-16, and 2018.
