Fred Rodriguez was a road cyclist who competed in the road race at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He raced professionally from 1996-2015 with various teams. Rodriguez was known as a sprint specialist, leading to the nickname “Fast Freddy”.
Rodriguez was US National Champion four times in the road race, in 2000-01, 2004, and 2013. He won four stages at the Tour of Georgia and stage nine of the 2004 Giro d’Italia. That was the only year he rode the Giro and he also rode the Vuelta a España one time, in 2006, and he finished both those grand tours. Rodriguez rode the Tour de France seven times but finished it only in 2000 and 2005.
In major one-day international races Rodriguez finished second at both Milano-San Remo and Gent-Wevelgem in 2002. As a sprinter he won the green jersey at the 2000 Tour de Suisse and the 2003 and 2006 Tour of Georgia, and he was second on GC at the 2003 Tour of Georgia. His other victories included the 1996 International Cycling Classic, the 2000 First Union Classic, the 2001 US Pro Championship, and in 2004, the Wachovia Classic and the Reading Classic.
