Biography

Austrian flatwater canoeist Wolfgang Hartl participated in two Olympics, at Moskva (Moscow) in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984. He partnered Werner Bachmayer and was eliminated in the 1980 semi-final in in the K2-500. In 1984 the pair qualified for both the 500 and 1,000 metres. Over 500 metres they reached the final but placed ninth and last. Over 1,000 metres they were eliminated in the semi-finals. In 1983, the duo won a bronze medal at the Sprint Canoe World Championships (over 1,000 metres).

Hartl later became a teacher for sports and English at Linz. In addition, he became state chairman of the Upper Austrian sports schools. His son Raphael became an Olympic rower at the 2000 Sydney and the 2004 Athens Games.
