Jon Lufkin competed in cross-country skiing at Fort Lewis College in Colorado, where he majored in history and captained the ski team. Lufkin competed at the 1968 Winter Olympics and the 1968 World Winter University Games. In 1969 he was selected as the Outstanding Scholar-Athlete of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
