Joseph Bock was initially trained as a baker. Afterwards he studied in Wien (Vienna) at the State Craft and Modeling School and later at the Academy. He created numerous sculptures in wood, stone and bronze, mainly portraits and small sculptures. The decaying art nouveau influenced his art. From 1921-38 he was a member of the Vienna Secession, and then became a member of the Künstlerhaus. During the Nazi era, he was considered regime-oriented and also designed a Hitler bust. The Female surfer was probably Bock’s bronze sculpture Woman on a fish.
