Austrian painter Karl-Maria May succeeded in the post World War II era with considerable personal efforts. From 1945-54 he was president of the Wien Künstlerhaus, whose reviving and establishing he headed after the ravages of war. May studied in Wien (Vienna) at the Academy of Fine Arts where he was later a professor. In 1912 he received a travel grant to Rome. He served as an officer in both wars. May created mainly religious compositions, but also portraits, landscapes and genre drawings.
