The 20th century Dane Andreas Friis was a painter and etcher of landscapes. He studied art techniques at the København Academy and in Paris and was heavily influenced by French modernist painters. He frequently travelled to, and worked in, such locations as Paris, Berlin, München, Wien, Marseille, Roma, Firenze, Oslo and Spain. Spending a lot of time in a summer house on Bornholm, he was inspired by the local landscape.
“Riders in the Forest” is a motif to which Friis returned again and again. Early sketches and paintings were created in 1914/15. A version in oil on canvas in the format 70 x 56 cm was painted in 1930 and thus coincides with the exhibition in Los Angeles. It is located in the Nordsjaellandsk Folkemuseum.
