René Besserve was a French painter, illustrator and cartoonist, who sometimes used the pseudonym Henry Reb. He was educated at the École des Beaux-Arts Montpellier and the Académie Julian Paris. From 1911-40 he produced drawings for Cri de Paris and Rire, in 1912 for Ruy Blas, and in 1915 for Fantasio. Besserve produced frequent humorous political illustrations in a cubistic style. Besserve, who worked in Paris, also created several posters such as for the 1928 Chamonix Winter Olympics. As a painter Besserve mostly painted landscapes of the Paris region and Brittany, but also portraits in oil and watercolor. He primarily exhibited in Paris, notably from 1920-38 at the Salon d’Automne, 1926-38 at the Salon des Indépendants, and 1928-39 at the Salon des Tuileries.
