Henri Pontoy, educated at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, was one of the last representatives of the French school of neo-classical Orientalism, as he travelled a lot around Northern and West Africa, and these travels influenced his works deeply. Before WWII he visited Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco, where he also was a professor of art in Fez. After the war he went to Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon.
