Biography

British painter Clifford Hall studied at Richmond Art School and Putney Art School from 1922-27. From 1928 he lived in Paris, where he painted mostly local scenes. His Bohemian life there was fueled by drink and women. Due to a lack of money (which was a lifelong problem) he returned to Britain in the 1930s. His topics included motifs from the circus, theater and cabaret, but he also painted numerous landscapes, figurative paintings and portraits. During World War II he stayed in London and drew a series of street scenes from bombed-out London. In the late 1960s he painted women, wrapped in towels, faces unseen, on beaches or in interiors – haunting and mysterious pictures.

Trubka and his Tigers was already painted in 1937. This oil painting became part of a private collection. Even earlier, in 1933, Hall created Football Match (oil on wood, 14 x 20 cm), which is owned by the National Football Museum in Manchester.
