Robert Miller moved from Glasgow to Sunderland to take up a post as a teacher of pottery and sculpture at the local College of Art in 1950. In 1952, Miller was one of two Sunderland College teachers to have works accepted for an exhibition at the Royal Academy. His selected piece was a terra-cotta bust sculpture of his wife entitled Alise. He met his wife while on a travelling scholarship in Denmark, where he studied ceramics and sculpture. Miller was also an ardent bagpipe player. He also led a bagpipe group while in København (Copenhagen).
