Sir Walter Westley Russell was a British painter, graphic artist and art teacher. He studied at the Westminster School of Art and exhibited in his early years at the Royal Academy of Arts and the New English Art Club. He painted landscapes, mainly from East and Southeast England, but also portraits, genre scenes, interiors and architecture. For more than 30 years he worked as a teacher and assistant professor at the Slade School of Fine Art. In World War I Russell served as a lieutenant with the Royal Engineers. In 1926, he was elected as member of the Royal Academy and served as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools from 1927-42. He was also appointed trustee of the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery and knighted in 1935.
