Hanns Hoyer attended art schools in Krefeld, Düsseldorf, and Zürich before studying at the Akademie für Graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe (Academy of Graphic Arts and Books) in Leipzig. In 1919, he became a teacher in graphic art and letterpress printing at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin (Berlin State School of Fine Arts) and held this position until 1948. Hoyer designed bookplates, lettering, and advertisements and developed the new fonts “Hoyer-Fraktur” and “Hoyer-Schönschrift”.
The surviving copies of the Ehrenurkunde des Reichspräsidenten für die Reichsjugendwettkämpfe (Honorary certificate of the President of the Reich for the Reich Youth Competitions, in the catalog simply listed as Honorary Certificate) from the years before 1928 cannot clearly be assigned to one particular graphic artist. It is also possible that the entry was an unrealized design.
