German sculptor Wilhelm Rietschel served in World War II from 1939-41, when he was killed in action near Leningrad. He was a sculptor of small figures. Rietschel studied at the Academy in Dresden and was a pupil of Karl Albiker and Richard Scheibe until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. During his studies he made extensive travels to Italy. Wilhelm was a great-grandson of the sculptor Ernst Rietschel (1804-1861).
