Erwin Spuler

German sculptor and painter Erwin Spuler studied from 1922 to 1929 in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, and he then worked as a freelance artist. In 1931 he entered the service of the Karlsruhe-situated Majolika manufacture. The architectural ceramic artist mostly produced image and relief tiles, and also some small sculptures. Spuler’s favorite motifs were female nudes, first in the succession of French Impressionism. In 1934 he became a member of the Reich Chamber of Culture and created monumental wall ceramics in the Nazi sense. After World War II Spuler also created ceramic vessels, especially vases and bowls. In addition, he continued work as a painter, draftsman and printmaker and was a lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Karlsruhe. His wife Elisabeth (1914-88) was also a painter.
