In the new event for reliefs, only two medals were awarded, as no bronze medal was given. The gold went to Germany, represented by Emil Sutor. He won his medal with the relief Hürdenläufer (Hurdlers), but he is perhaps better known for designing the statue awarded to the winners of the Bambi Award, an annual German media prize. The silver medallist was the 1932 champion in the medals and reliefs category, which had been split for 1936. Józef Klukowski, of Poland, is one of only six artists to have won two or more medals in the Olympic art competitions.
