An impressionist painter, Freek Engel is best known as a painter of romantic landscapes and cows, often combining them. After being educated at the local graphic school, Engel’s father-in-law asked him to work as a photographer. But when his paintings of cows and landscapes gradually became popular (around 1905), he gave up photography and became a full-time painter. He also started teaching art at night school and became a member of the Arti et Amicitiae art association. Engel twice entered a work for the Olympic art competitions, in 1924 and 1936. Both works featured sailing, which was one of the topics Engel enjoyed besides landscapes and cows.
