Dutch painters Egbert Schaap and Hendrika Schaap-van der Pek were a couple. After her death he married singer Frieda Mooy. From 1884-87 Egbert Scaap, who considered himself a teacher, studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Until 1913 he painted and taught watercolors in a dark color palette, specializing in urban and woodland scenes, while belonging to the Amsterdam impressionist circle. With his first wife he lived a life of great wealth, as both were enriched by their art. The title of his 1924 entry Tjotter Race refers to the Tjotters, the smallest of the typical Frisian sailing boats.
